Fibroscan Ultrasound Q & A

What is a FibroScan® ultrasound?

FibroScan® is an ultrasound technology that can measure liver scarring (fibrosis), liver stiffness, and liver fat buildup. The team uses these measurements to diagnose and better understand liver disease.

A FibroScan ultrasound provides a painless, nonsurgical alternative to a traditional invasive liver biopsy.

When do I need a FibroScan ultrasound?

The team may recommend a FibroScan ultrasound to assess the health of your liver and detect liver damage or disease.

They may encourage an ultrasound if you have a known chronic liver condition, such as:

  • Alcoholic liver disease
  • Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease
  • Cirrhosis
  • Genetic diseases (hemochromatosis or Wilson’s disease)
  • Hepatitis B
  • Hepatitis C

If left untreated, fatty liver disease and severe fibrosis can lead to cirrhosis, a life-threatening condition where your liver no longer functions properly. A FibroScan ultrasound is a quick and effective way to prevent future health complications.

What happens during a FibroScan ultrasound?

You should fast for three hours before your appointment at the Enlyv Clinic offices and be sure to wear loose-fitting clothing.

FibroScan requires no sedation, and you can drive yourself to and from the appointment. You can expect the procedure to take around five minutes and the appointment to last about 30 minutes.

During the procedure, you lie on your back and raise your right arm behind your head. Your provider applies a gel to your skin and places the noninvasive probe over your liver. You may feel a subtle vibration on your skin under the probe, but you won’t experience any pain.

You have no downtime after the procedure, and the results are available immediately.

FibroScan provides you with a CAP score — which measures the amount of your liver with fatty change and corresponds to your steatosis grade. A lower CAP score means you have a healthier liver and less fatty change.

The FibroScan also provides a fibrosis score based on the amount of scarring in your liver. The lower the score, the healthier your liver is and the less scarring you have.

After reviewing your results, the team may encourage healthy lifestyle changes to reverse liver damage. They can also refer you to an outside specialist if you need further care.
